The Handmade Event is going through some changes because I am too - I expect to be back with more news in the new year, but in the meantime I am still finding inspiration like a madwoman and would love to share it. Fashion's Night Out

I love Fashion's Night Out, though I am not sure that it actually works for businesses. It certainly works for me, though, and I have a great time every year. The first year, I won six Fashion Photography books and had a sketch made of me by Behnaz Sarafpour. The second year, I got a Diane von Furstenberg book (who my husband actually asked for directions, not knowing who she was) and met Jonathan Adler. This year might have been the best, however, because I crossed an item off my Mighty Life List (more on that in a minute)

For those of you who don't have a Fashion's Night Out in your town, the event was created by Anna Wintour/Vogue to support retailers whose bottom lines had been suffering due to the downturn in the economy. This one night only event would encourage shoppers to stay late and support businesses. The shops would stay open (until 11pm in some cases) and many would have incentives, discounts, or special promotions. The special promotions are what really sucked me in. Designer appearances, free gifts, refreshments, djs, parties, merchandise created just for the event, etc. I don't know if people actually buy things or if they, like me, just go around to see all the shops they like put on a fun show.

I created my must visit list this year and though I didn't hit all of them, I did get to my top priorities. A quick recap of the night:

Met the Manolo Blahnik milkshake truck. Cute idea. $5 for a milkshake was too much for a girl that just left her day job, though. Especially since a flood of free snacks was going to start at 6pm, but I figured it was cheaper than a new pair of shoes (I recommend the Coffee flavor)

Went to the Soho Sephora. Normally Sephora would not be on my list, but they did some really great things this year - musical performances, special appearances, etc. I was there for the art. The team from Stila cosmetics was in store giving makeup applications as well as having the artists/designers of the brand draw personalized Stila girls for the first 20 people. You can bet I was there early, because I wanted to be a Stila girl! My friend, and motivational speaker extraordinaire Catherine (aka Cat) Lavelle met me downtown and waited it out with me. The store didn't really have a good idea what was going on - but we did get drinks and ice cream and finally a makeover/sketch!

We headed up the street - did a stop in Lucky Jeans, where Tim Gunn was supposed to be but wasn't (that would occur again) though they did have these amazing Lavender and Chocolate Macarons. So, thumbs up Lucky.

Quick stop in Bloomingdales. There was a Marc by Marc Jacobs ice cream truck outside for a cute touch. Fashion's Night Out is all about the food truck. This one didn't have food - just Marc jewelry, but nice idea. Bloomingdales had the potential for friendship bracelet making, but our time was better spent elsewhere, so we moved along.

Roxy surf shop. They didn't have any of the pro athletes that Cat was hoping to see, but they did give us a quick mini manicure with Minx nailstrips. Somehow only doing a few fingers is cool. We are cool now. Though we realized that we weren't cut out to the be the "New Face of Roxy" - we are not delusional - but a lot of tween girls were vying for that.

We headed up to J. Crew, where design director and all around awesome lady Jenna Lyons was supposed to be styling people and taking pictures. We were there - with lots of stylish folks and a long line for the bar - but no Jenna. She couldn't make it. Disappointing (because as much as Cat wants to be a cool surfer athlete in casual skirts with cut arms I want to be like Jenna in a feather ball gown skirt and old man sweater). Moving on!

We walk towards our next destination and pass food trucks. I feel like any business that has a food truck must have been booked for tonight. The trucks we passed only took tickets, and by asking a snacking girl we figured out that the tickets were available in Joe's Jeans. Happy to see you, Joe's - and the fact that the jeans come in 55 colors (including buttercup and light cocoa) was interesting - where are the tickets? A lady in a sparkly dress hands them out and we are back out on the street, happily munching on really good dumplings.

On to Kate Spade, where people are doing Karaoke in the window. It is a sea of very KS looking girls, and a few guys, with big pink flowers in their hair or on lapels. So adorable. I snag the last one. I also probably overwhelm Deborah Lloyd, the creative director. I am guessing that not many people know her by sight, but I do and I have to introduce myself and say that I probably wear a piece of Kate Spade every day, so I think that the direction she is taking the brand is fantastic. She, in a cute cardigan and jewelry, looks slightly dazed so Cat moves us into the store. We fill out entry forms to win shopping parties (and promise to include the other) while a very Liza Minelli-like singer belts next the Karoke machine - clearly a ringer. The store is packed, and even though I am tempted to shop my little heart out, we move on.

We head to DVF, because I would love to see Ms. von Furstenberg - and not to have Matthew ask her where the free books were - but when we arrive she isn't there. The long line outside was to take a photo of yourself and get a photo flip book. Taking pictures of yourself is also a prime activity during Fashion's Night Out - photobooths, flip books, social media posting, etc. are a big part of the night. Since I hate having my picture taken and didn't think that waiting for it was a good use of our FNO time, we kept walking.

Our next destination was going to be Kenneth Cole. The man himself was going to be at the store, and there was a musical performance of some sort. On the way, however, we pass the Phaidon book party.

It was on my list (mostly to tell my friend Harriet, a fantastic fashion illustrator) because Garance Dore had a collection of work there and was going to be at the party. As we walk by, we pass not only Garance, but her beau Scott Shuman, the Sartorialist, as well. I am a bit star struck. Cat couldn't pick them out of a lineup. That's the thing with bloggers, even bloggers as well known as those two. Not everyone knows who they are, and even if they do, Garance and Scott are not always pictured when they are mentioned, so they can fly a little under the radar. I know them instantly and as we pass by I take a stalker-like picture of them outside.

Catherine says I shouldn't just take a picture of them, I should ask to take a picture with them. We keep walking as I tell her that I can't - I would feel awkward. It is my true nature to be very shy around people I don't know. I don't like introducing myself at parties, I hate to intrude. I also (as I said before) don't care for having my picture taken - I always look weird. Maybe I look like that in real life and just don't know it, but I think it is the photo process, so I tend to avoid it.

As we walk blocks away I start thinking about how it might have been my chance to meet Scott and Garance. I read their blogs every day, and beyond that having my picture taken by The Sartorialist was on my Mighty Life List (a list of 100 things to do before you die). He takes pictures of very fashionable people on the street and it is a dream to have him take a photo of me. I tell Cat this, that this might have been a chance to cross something off my MLL but I couldn't do it. I didn't look stylish - choosing comfy clothes and being out for hours in the heat had not done me any favors - and I would feel stupid talking to them. It was eating at me a little, though, that I walked by without stopping, and with Catherine's encouragement I said we should go back so I could talk to them. Back we went.

At the bookstore, Garance and Scott were no longer outside but in - talking with others, Garance occasionally posing for a photo and being fab. I skirted around, not sure how to approach them. Catherine as the wingman kept moving us closer and finally said, "Go, get in there" and I spoke to Scott. I told him that I was a fan of his, that I had actually submitted a photo of my grandparents for his Vintage photo project, and as Garance came over to join him I asked if I could take a picture with them. Yep. Score. Cat took a picture.

I decided to press my luck and asked Scott (after stumbling a bit describing the Mighty Life List) if he would take a picture of me with my iphone camera so I can cross it off my list. I grabbed Cat and he took a photo of us. CROSSED IT OFF - HAVE MY PHOTO TAKEN BY THE SARTORIALIST - awesome.

I thanked them both and as Scott went off for a moment (they were actually getting ready to leave, so we had come back just in time) I spoke to Garance. I told her that we had a friend who would love to do what she does (Harriet) and that they should talk. We spoke about shoes. I said we actually took a photograph of her shoes because they were so cute.

I spoke to Garance Dore about shoes! Heaven. She told us that she gets so exited for shoes and then once photographed in them finds it hard to wear them again. I mention her Pradas (I read the blog - for reals) and she says "exactly! I was so excited and I wore them once. Once! Then that photograph was everywhere and now I look at them and think - nope can't wear them". I told her that was the curse of having good taste that was very current, everyone will know what season the hot item is from. She agreed, though demurred about having good taste. Catherine, who had read about the photographer couple in a magazine but hadn't read their blogs, jumped on the Garance train hard-core.

As we left, Catherine and I talked about how they couldn't have been nicer. Scott said goodbye again when we left and we thanked him and wished them a good night. (side note - could his eyes be any bluer or more fantastic? I think not) and Cat was so delighted to have a new cool-girl idol with brown curly hair (like her's) that she is probably going to start reading Garance's blog tonight. I practically skipped down the street - after profusely thanking Catherine for making me speak up.

I felt like the night couldn't get any better - and Cat had to work tomorrow - so we decided to call it a night.

But a few more stops: On the way to the subway we passed the big Addias store on Houston and popped in. Catherine is a runner (and was an Addias ambassador, so knows her stuff) and was looking for something and I am searching for the perfect comfy shoes to walk all over the city in. We somehow managed to get the most obnoxious salesperson in all of shoe-dom, and there was a slight tiff about what kind of arch support I would need, because apparently I roll my ankles or something. Mostly I didn't even care about the arch support - I just wanted something cute and those shoes weren't, and we left without buying anything.

Though I thought we were done as Catherine and I took separate subways headed, but I couldn't resist stopping in the Village to go to the Marc Jacobs store. There was a huge block party put on by Teen Vogue, but I missed that. I did however score a free Marc Jacobs tote bag with a creepy clown on it. How could I resist?

It turns out that I did buy something on Fashion's Night Out - a pencil at the Bookmarc store. I took my tote, grabbed a hot dog at Papaya King, saw my favorite Kate Spade phrase on a cab, and got on the subway home.

Understated is Overrated

Did I do my part to help struggling retailers? Obviously not. But I do think that the $1 I spent on the pencil at BookMarc was worth every penny.

So to recap - I'm a Stila Girl who has had her picture taken by the Sartorialist, talked about shoes with a super stylish Parisian, ate junk food and got a free Marc Jacobs bag. This is what my Heaven is like.

I can't wait until next year...

Weekend

A few hours north of NYC, it should be lovely in the small quaint hamlet of Hunter.

A wooded area, a waterfall, colorful dresses, a 5k "Race to the Chuppah", and lots of dancing.

Around New York - The Theater/Theatre

I go back and forth with my spelling re or er? Anyone have a preference?

Regardless, it has been a good theater week for me. Musical city!

The week began with Follies. Thank heaven for student rush tickets. Yes, I did sit and wait on the ground for two hours before the box office opened. No, I was not the first person in line. No, I was not the oldest one in line with a current student id. There was a gentleman in his late 50s who had a student id, though the security guard tried to call him out on it, but he stuck to his guns and got to see Bernadette!

I was not familiar with this show so I had nothing to compare it against. I believe some of the earlier performances were filmed and Matthew had seen clips including Carol Burnett in a role. Bernadette Peters was fantastic as Sally Durant Plummer and Jan Maxwell sizzles as her old friend/competition Phyllis Rogers Stone.

I won't give the plot away, but the story is described as
Past and present, dreams and reality collide for one triumphant, haunting and unforgettable night when former members of the "Weismann's Follies" reunite on the eve of their theater's demolition. Two couples remember their glorious past and face the harsher realities of the present as the shadows of their younger selves remind them of the complicated steps they've danced—both on the stage and throughout their lives.

The direction on this was superb. In fact the entire creative team was great - sound, set design and costume (ooh, the costumes. Rhinestones galore) - but the directing prowess to tell stories in at least two memories and times simultaneously was great. While parts of this show are sad (there were tears in the seat next to me at least twice) there are also some joyful and skillfully choreographed dance numbers. I also applaud the use of gorgeous ghost showgirls as living set pieces - it is hard to describe, but every moment on stage is a beautifully composed picture of past and present.

I am so glad that I went to see it and I am sure that once it gets a rave review in the Times I wouldn't have been able to get tickets.

Another hard ticket to come by was for the show I saw last night - Anything Goes

I would kill for Sutton Foster's voice (and her legs - those aren't photoshopped, the lady has gams for days and this show uses them to their best advantage). A toe-tapping, rollicking good time this show, which won the Tony award this year for best revival of a musical and another Tony for Sutton as the lead.

She earns it every night as saucy nightclub singer Reno Sweeney with a New York accent, tough facade, and a yearning for love underneath the sass. Joel Grey is the somewhat schmaltzy sidekick (though blame the book - not his timing) who, in a convoluted plot best left for the stage, is a criminal, a reverend, and a chinaman. Young lovers, overprotective parents, a saucy criminal doll, a millionaire, and lots of sailors populate this showboat. I can't get some of the songs out of my head and my toes were tapping along during some amazing dance numbers.

You won't need Gabriel to blow his horn - you will be blowing your own at this feel good (though cheesy) shipboard farce.

On the calendar for Friday? Cirque du Soleil's Zarkana. It's a busy week!

Big Change

I am leaving my position at the Fashion Institute of Technology to pursue (among other things) working on The Handmade Event full time. This big change will happen September 2nd.

This means:

Full wedding planning options (so I can meet you at the florist during the day, or take a frantic phone call about cake any time, not just after 5pm)

More reliable blog posts - I am spending the next few weeks scanning and uploading some of my favorite tear sheets and inspiration images (I have a file cabinet full) so that I can post them here

More adventurous blog posts - I can do more exploring New York posts, as well as step-by-step DIY instructions (must learn to work my camera...)

Time for Me, Me, Me (it only affects you guys indirectly, but this is the most important part). There are a number of big changes happening in my life

- After over 8 years in NYC I am looking to see if there is another part of the country I would like to live. Family and friends in the South make that the most appealing option, so I may plan some events in Atlanta, the Raleigh area, Nashville, and the like to get a feel for the market.

- Getting back to my best self - not to go all Oprah on you, but I haven't been taking very good care of myself. I eat horribly and don't exercise and the damage it has done to my body is catching up with me. Time to make it to physical therapy, and learn how to cook (and eat) vegatables, and fix all the things I never get around to.

- Big life clean out. I have started (you guys saw the shoe closet makeover) but there is so much left in the apartment that I need to sort through. Look out Ebay, here I come.

- Love New York. If I am indeed leaving, I know it won't be for good (in fact I have weddings booked in NYC a year from now so I will have to come back) but right now I do not like my city. Too much rush hour, too much screaming babies, bad smells and feeling small. I need to explore the parts I care about and fall in love again. So I bought my membership to the ballet and the Met and I have been holding onto Time Out New York walking guides and it is time to explore.

I am excited for this big change, and I add to my list every day the things that I want to accomplish when I am working for myself. It is scary, but will be great.

As my therapist says, "and if it doesn't work out? So what? You do something else"

Beyond the Big Day - Grey and Sparkle

I do love when wedding dresses are not the traditional white/ivory. This bluish grey gown by Michelle Jank is a particularly striking color.

Friendship Bracelets

If you went to camp - you made them. If you were a girl at my elementary school, you made them. Now, if you are fashionable, you wear them (probably made by some cool girl in Brooklyn). Yes, I am talking about the friendship bracelet. I am on the bandwagon again and am making some for myself.

Following the great instructions on The Purl Bee, the tricks on knots and stripes all came back to me. Unfortunately, my first attempt didn't look quite as great as I wanted it to, but I have high hopes for my next few.

I was in Micheal's (the craft store) yesterday and standing with me at the embroidery floss display was an older woman with a list of colors - obviously for a cross stitch or embroidery project with color instructions - and a young, good-looking hipster couple. She had a neon yellow thread bracelet around her wrist and he was picking out the colors he wanted her to use to make his. Friendship bracelets have gone multi-gender!

I need to practice more to get the knots tighter and more even, but I think that this might be a great distraction while watching tv or a stress reliever on long commutes. Once I have a few, I can't wait to wear them out -mixed with other bracelets, they look effortlessly cool.

Beyond the Big Day - Pink

Beyond the big day, you can bring pink into your life is some charming ways. We can't all wear a big pink tulle dress everyday - though props to you if you dare. I wanted to look at some other ways to inject the girlie hue into your home and life.

Whether a bright front door

or the perfect pale shade for a cozy breakfast nook (I love this room)

This pale pink can be a great neutral in a room that gets a lot of light.

Perhaps you wouldn't want to commit to pink walls (I don't think every guy would give it the thumbs up) so use the color as a pop in furniture

Or art.

Pink is flattering on many skin tones (though stay away from pepto bismol pink - it is hard to pull off) if you wanted it off your walls and into your closet.

I saw this pink tulle dress by Samuelle Couture on Stellina Events write up on Once Wed and just love it. It put me in a pink state of mind, so am focusing today on other way's to inject some pink into your wedding day

Veering from the traditional white dress can be a nice change and this subtle pink silk tulle would be perfect for a dreamy day.

This dress inspired a pink state of mind, and I rounded up some other pink pieces for a celebration:

Start by setting the tone with a modern pink invitation. The black, white, and grey tones keep the invite from being too girlie.

You can inject a little pink into the ceremony, with pink tissue paper balls hung in front of a curtain set up

and to the reception tables with this cute guestbook idea. Pink envelopes just waiting for your guests sweet notes and advice.

Another pink reception touch - these lovely placemats by Cici New York. I happen to think they are outrageously expensive ($25 for 4) so I would use them in the center of tables instead of under each plate. They would also look great on a specialty table - guest book, dessert, escort cards, etc. Where guests will see them, but you don't have to take out a loan for paper placemats.

and the finishing pink touch for your wedding? This cake decorated in M&Ms in graduated shades. I want to try my hand and making one of these (though that might be a recipe for disaster)

If nothing else, throw on a pair of pink heels with your dress. Yes, I have posted these shoes before, and don't care - because I love them. Come to me, my precious...

I am always happy to discover new artists whose work inspires me (and makes me wish I had more wall space/money for buying art) and my new favorite is Rolf Armstrong.

I have always been a fan of Vargas' girls and pin up art, but I had never heard of Armstrong. I am so glad that I know about him now and these beauties are hard to miss (love that girl in the golden dress).

I have always been a fan of alternative bouquets. These paper flowers are lovely and great for a book-loving couple.

If I actually wanted to be outside in this heat (which I really don't) this picnic looks charming. Making a chevron stripe picnic blanket would keep you off the grass in style.

Million Dollar Decorators

I am a fan of Bravo television. They hooked me years ago with Project Runway and continued the love with Top Chef, Top Design, Work of Art, and – much to my chagrin – The Real Housewives. I am invested in NY (and Bethenney on her own), NJ and OC.

Well, my Bravo addiction grew even more with the first season of their new show Million Dollar Decorators. The finale was last night (there were only 8 episodes – not enough!) but you can catch up on www.sidereel.com and clips on Bravo

This show focuses on the personalities – and believe me there are big personalities – and projects of high level decorators in Los Angeles. These folks are the cream of the crop, so clients and work take them all over the world. I find Martyn charming -I thought he was slimy at first, but now I realize he has some sort of over-abundance of natural suaveness. I think Kathryn is hilarious - she seems to have the perfect balance of family and work, despite annoying clients. Nathan has my dream job, his own adorable shop filled with fantastic finds, and JAM (Jeffrey Alan Marks) and Ross couldn’t be more pleasant to look at (and talented to boot). Side note: gotta love a happy gay couple on television. The fact that they live and work together, while looking gorgeous and with talent to spare is a great example of a shouldn't-be-"alternative"-should-just-be lifestyle.

My favorite star, however is Mary McDonald. She is a pip. Nathan believes the character of Karen on “Will and Grace” is based on her – I don’t know about that because unlike Karen she seems to be sober all the time, but she does have great taste and zippy one-liners. Beyond an enviable wardrobe and hair, her designs are amazing! Right up my alley. There hasn’t been an example of her work on the show that I wouldn’t love to have in my house. Her signature painted floors and punches of color are just what my living spaces need.

Yesterday I told you that I am heading to Camp Mighty in November and a large part of that experience is sharing our Mighty Life Lists - hopefully with be goal of crossing things off that weekend as well as building a community of people committing to helping each other reach those goals.

Camp Mighty

So, I am starting a Mighty Life List. I think that I may even make it a tab on this website so I can add revisit (and hopefully cross off) some items. For more information about Mighty Life Lists, the creator and originator, Maggie (Mighty Girl) talks all about them.

Why am I starting my list? Beyond the fact that I think it is a good idea, and I always wanted to capture the things that I want to achieve in my life, I am going to Camp Mighty and I will need 100 items on my list - and hopefully I will check off a few (learning to throw a punch and saber open a bottle of champagne are already going to be crossed off at the event).

Super excited about attending - and would love to see you there too!

This wedding is so perfect (from dress to ribbons to men in kilts)

If I had a wedding to be in or go to, I think I would snap up this headband from Which Goose in two seconds. Actually, I really want it to just wear on an average Tuesday it is so pretty

I am always a fan of Chevron, and this post highlights some of the best uses around (I want the dress!)

In an effort to get more organized, I have bought to-do iphone applications. What I really want is this journal/calendar illustrated by Jessica Hische, though.

Bob Mackie, always a favorite of mine for his costumes for Cher and Carol Burnett, has now starting selling his drawings. I collect fashion illustrations and would love to add an original to my wall. While those aren't easily had, his website makes ordering prints easy and there are one or two that would find a happy home in my apartment (warning: there are also creepy clown and cat ones. Bad Bob)

Around New York - The Theater

I have been on a little roll with theater productions lately - some highs and some lows, but in case you were looking for something to do this weekend I thought I would give you a round up. Would love to hear about anything good that you have seen lately.

Catch Me If You Can

This musical is not going to change your life. There is no cathartic moment that alters how you view the world, but it was a solid bit of fun. A parfait, if you will. Norbert Leo Butz won the Tony for his work as the detective on the trail of Frank Abagnale Jr. Tom Hanks played him in the film version, and Butz does a fine job as the overstressed authority frustrated (and a little charmed) but the teenage conman.

Aaron Tveit, who had to struggle to hang onto the role as the version made its way to Broadway, is a charmer. Is the singing a little thin? Yes. Does he plum the depths of this character? No. Would you still be taken in by the rascally rake? Yep. He is likable as Frank and carries show much of the show on his own.

I had a special treat when I went to see the show, because the real Frank Abagnale, Jr. was in the audience and conducted a talk back after the curtain. It was really a highlight because he talked about the differences between his real adventures and the film, and the show. He paid back all the money he stole (most of it was still in safety deposit boxes around the world, he said, because he really didn't know what to spend it on) and said that he was able to get away with it because he was so young. He was too young to know better, so had the confidence to pull off the games.

If only the real Frank was at every performance then I would say "Go!" but I will recommend it, especially if you have family in town and need something that wouldn't be offensive to tweens or grandparents.

Jerusalem

Do you like good theater? Then go - go now and buy a ticket. The run is almost at the end and you will kick yourself if you miss Mark Rylance's performance in this play. I have never been more sure of someone deserving their Tony Award as he did for this role. I actually thought he earned it 20 minutes in - much less the 3 hours of this play, the second half of which turns increasingly dramatic. Laugh out loud funny and completely heartbreaking, he was astonishing. I had seen Rylance in another Tony-winning role in "Boeing, Boeing" and although the characters could not be more different, he is as fully committed and engaging in this piece - as Rooster, a local drunken leader of youth revolt and forest dwelling rapscallion. I had basically no idea what the show was about when I bought tickets, and that was fine. I didn't need to know - and you don't really either. Just go. Then, watch his Tony acceptance speeches. This guy may be a genius or a complete whackjob. Either way - compelling.

Death Takes a Holiday

I wanted this to be amazing. Sounded right up my alley - a new musical, based on the play/movie, set in the 1920s, romance - death taking human form and falling in love in Venice. I wasn't as swept away as I wanted to be. Certainly the leads were beautiful singers (and the actor playing Death is beautiful, period) but the book/lyrics were a little schmaltzy for me. Or, perhaps I was distracted by the person in the seat next to me who was rocking back and forth the entire time, shaking my seat.

This weekend, I have tickets for Baby It's You, which I do not have high hopes for - but they were cheap tickets!

Well, that didn't last long

After the great shoe closet clean out, I felt like I had a lot of room for shoes again, and decided to get myself a pair as a congratulatory pat on the back.

I acknowledge the foolhardiness of this thinking, but stay with me.

I had also been reading up on some of my favorite fashion blogs, in particular Sea of Shoes and Atlantis Home. These two blogs, run by daughter and mother respectively, really showcase the fashion forward mix of high, low, vintage and fab accessories I really yearn to have in my own closet.

In reading those I was struck by a couple of pairs of shoes that I really coveted.

And, since I knew that I had made room by clearing out a bunch of shoes...

I lucked out (or maybe not) and found these shoes on Barneys.com on sale. It was like a present meant just for me, because they had been on sale for a little while and only my size was left. So I bought them. I must have gotten the last pair, because now they aren't even on the website.

I got them for a good deal (60% off or so) but they were still a lot of money. More money than someone who has as many shoes as I do should be spending. Money for shoes I will probably never wear because I am not a gorgeous fashion blogger from Texas

I also thought that the tan leather ankle straps might look like ace bandages or something when I wore them. So I canceled the order.

But - Barney's hasn't confirmed the cancellation yet, so maybe they are still on the way...

and I just got a confirmation for the shipping. So, they will arrive and I will have to be strong and return them.

Shoe Closet Clean Out

I have too many pairs of shoes. I am not afraid of admitting it (though I am a bit ashamed of how the loads of shoes I have make me an example of conspicuous consumerism). I have long dealt with any type of sadness or boredom by buying things to make myself feel better, and then I hang on to them.

Eventually all these possessions will suffocate me (not in the dangerous hoarders, really fall on me and suffocate me way - but...maybe so), more in the "I can't find the space to grow into the person I would like to be if I see tons of junk everywhere I look" way. So I decided to start cleaning out this mess of a house/life with shoes.

I have about 250 pairs. Yep, that's right. It is not that I buy a new pair every week (though I do buy a fair amount - I owe Kate Spade my first born child) but mostly because I never get rid of any. Some of these things I have kept because they are practical (my favorite pair of black ballet flats I have worn for 6 six years. Six years! And they were from Payless, so that was a good deal) and some because they are sentimental (I still have the shoes I wore to my senior prom, people).

Most of these shoes are stored on racks in my bedroom - except for the expensive ones, which are kept in their boxes with dustbags and sometimes labeled, stacked on the floor and in bookcases. Those left on the rack to the elements tend to get dusty, though. That may be what living in a dirty city with a pet and no maid will do. I didn't want to keep them all in boxes because I would forget what I have (and sometimes I still do) and the storage would be a larger pain. So, they sit jumbled and dusty and as I pull a pair out to try them on they creep across the bedroom floor. So my room looked like this:

This weekend I took some time (ahem, 6 hours) and tried on all my shoes. Dusted them all. Put 20 pairs into a donate bag - a friend with 7.5 feet will get first crack and them, and then off to Goodwill if she doesn't want them - and another 5 pairs into a pile to take to a resale shop. I moved some of the more practical shoes from boxes onto racks to replace the donations and I organized the rest.

When I took 15 empty shoe boxes to the recycling bin Matthew said "It's like Christmas!" because he was happy to get the space.

I cleaned and color coded and shifted a few around, and now the shoe section of the bedroom looks like this:

I didn't get rid of any Kate Spades, though

Do I feel a bit less suffocated? Yes, I do. Is Matthew happier - yep. There is a ton of floor space I hardly know what to do with. Ballroom dancing? Maybe. Should this be a lesson to me to show that I don't need any more shoes and I should be content with what I have -and actually wear them instead of using my mantra "Oh, these shoes are so nice, I don't want to mess them up!" - yes.

Everyone knows I am big fan of the website A Practical Wedding - I am a vendor there (and love working with APW couples), and I am in the book club here in NYC and it is at the top of my "to read" list every day.

Another reason to support APW: Meg has joined forces with Liz of Lowe House Events to put on the first APW bash, taking place here in NYC to celebrate the legalization of gay marriage in New York, called Yay New York. Frankly, I wish I would have thought of it. I was thinking too small (maybe do a giveaway of free wedding planning for a LGBTQ couple - still thinking about it, so contact me if you are interested) but Meg and Liz thought big.

Throwing weddings for 5 couples, complete with invites, flowers, photography, cake and champers and then having a big dance party for 200 to raise money for Lambda Legal. There will also be cute totebags and posters to help foot the bill.

You can read all about the party here, but I am getting really excited because Liz asked me to help out with it. I imagine that most of the APW vendors who are based in NYC will have a hand in the day, and I am jazzed about participating.

Right now, I am thinking how best to make some things that fit in with the tone of the event and that I can make 5 of. I am feeling cake toppers and maybe ring pillows (depending on the couple, and if they have kids that they want in their "wedding party")

The colors and theme for the event are those in the poster, so I think I can make some really pretty things. I will even try and photograph the process along the way for either a DIY post here or on A Practical Wedding.

Tickets for the even won't go on sale for a little while, but for the next week, Meg and Liz are accepting applications from couples - so submit one!

Pretty website, I love you

I have been trying to get myself more organized and focus on making The Handmade Event a larger business. While starting any business is tough (especially in this economy!) I have been lucky to have taken baby steps.

Because of the day job, I have been taking classes for free at FIT and so I have focused quite a bit of energy on business classes. Including page-turners like Legal Basics for Business Startups and Knowing Your Market. Doesn't sound very sexy (especially when I could be taking Art in New York or The Great Designers) but I wanted to know as much as possible before I try and build my wedding business.

One valuable lesson from these types of classes is that so much of the business - and so much of life, really - is about networking. I suck at networking. I will work on a great project and never reach out to get people's contact information or follow up with them. I worked on the new book for website design*sponge, which is sure to be amazing (the blog is a must read and I love everything that Grace Bonney does), and I didn't stay in contact. I did my little piece and went away. As if to say "well, if you wanted to reach me, you know where I am." I have done the same thing with PR companies and advertising agency contacts, other classmates and random people in bars. Well, I don't really meet random people in bars, but I have met them backstage at New York Fashion Week and never given them my email address. Foolish, and a wasted opportunity. I am trying not to make the same mistakes anymore.

A large part of networking is feeling confident about what you are presenting. So if I start commenting on other bloggers posts, or joining in on Twitter, or handing someone my business card, I want to make sure that where they go to follow up with me looks great. *I also want to make sure that I look great - as if I am my own business card - which is totally true - but so far that has been harder for me to reach. More on that in another post, as to get into body issues and loss of personal style in the middle of a website post is dangerous territory*

So, to make sure that if I give someone a card (note to self: get new cards) or post on their website with a linkback, I have a great presentation, I wanted to have my website updated. Which is why you are on now only the blog portion. The rest of my website, including services and pricing etc. has moved to a fancy new site. It is flash - beware ipad users! - but I am pretty proud of it.

I did a bit of crowd sourcing and asked for opinions from a few trusted colleagues (the other vendors on A Practical Wedding) and friends, and Mom. Mom had the most notes, but that was exactly what I expected. I made the changes that resonated the most with me and I think everyone's input was helpful before I launched it on my main domain.

I have to remember it is an active facet of my business, so as new photos become available and new clients write nice things, they need to go up and I may have to rejigger things. For a girl who considered herself computer un-savvy (savvy-less?) I am pretty proud of it.

So please, check it out - let me know if you find any typos (stupid web builder doesn't have spellcheck) and fingers crossed that it will bring new traffic here too.

Oh My Stars!

Since is the week of the 4th of July I thought I would round up some of my favorite stars and stripes inspiration, for your wardrobe, home and wedding. Let's begin with stars.

The above headpiece is by Stephen Jones for the most recent Dior couture collection. Frankly, I thought the collection was a bit of a dud (the lack of John Galliano at the helm made quite a difference) but I loved the shooting star headpiece.

This motif has repeated in previous seasons.

The star shoes from Stephano Pilati for YSL are a favorite. The necklace not quite as much, and the Chanel star print dress in the center is charming. For a smaller piece of designer stargazing, these Marc Jacobs star earrings would be a cute addition to your jewelry wardrobe.

Moving from the closet to the rest of the house, I like a sprinkling of stars mixed into home decor. I wouldn't do a constellation in glow stars on the ceiling (though I really wanted one in my earlier years) unless it was like Grand Central Terminal's

For a subtler statement, I like a strategically placed star in the room. This white room looks so inviting (one of these days I will be able to keep white furniture clean. Maybe?)

New York is about to become the 6th state to legalize gay marriage. I am so glad to live someplace that - finally - allows those who love each other to get married, no matter their sexual orientation. I called my senator and signed the petitions, and I am glad that our elected officials are following the will of the people.

If any of those couples that can now legally tie the knot need a wedding planner - call me. I would love to help you have the day of your dreams (that I have been dreaming about for you)

If I was in the market for a new handbag (which I am really not, but purse shopping with my mom last weekend got me in the mood) I would buy one of the classic school bags from the Cambridge Satchel Company

I think the green might be my favorite, but it is hard to choose!

In personal shopping, I may need one of these necklaces by British brand Tatty Devine

I think that as a girl married to a circus artist, I really need the trapeze necklace
and the Cameo is of William and Kate (with the wedding date inscribed on the back - charming!)

and if I was in the market for fine jewelry instead, this sapphire ring from on EidelPrecious is gorgeous

Wallpaper - Lovely

I did a round up of my favorite fun pattern wallpapers yesterday, but I have also been feeling the pull of a gorgeous (read: expensive) hand painted paper or striking rich image.

Here are some of my favorites

This tree paper from Cole and Son has been everywhere on the internet, so I apologize for the repeat, but I still love it. I think that it would be haunting in a dining room or as a statement wall in a bedroom.

If the tree motif is a little too woodsy for you, I think that a sophisticated stripe can look great in any room

If florals are more to your taste, I love the abstract flowers in Oh Joy's wallpaper for Hygge and West. I particularly like the gold colorway

though I was worried that the pattern in gold would be too busy, looking at Joy's living room with multiple framed art pieces really turns the gold paper into a neutral backdrop

For a lot less neutral, and a lot more money, I love this hand painted de Gournay paper that I first saw in the apartment of in Kiane von Mueffling in Elle Decor

For a rich pattern but a lighter color, this metallic floral paper is pretty in the dining room. I can't find the info on it (I had it listed in my files as akuka paper, but that doesn't seem to work

For a non floral but allover soothing pattern, this wallpaper in a bedroom designed by Massucoo Warner Miller is the perfect backdrop to a great headboard.

I think maybe I need to stop looking at home decor blogs - I really want to redecorate my place now!

Wallpaper - Fun

I am having a wallpaper moment. I used to hate it - thinking that I would never let some floral dated paper cover any rooms in my home. As I have grown older and refined my tastes a bit, though, I feel like some gorgeous papers are really impactful.

I am torn by my two impulses about wallpaper - to have it really graphic and ironic (perhaps a funny or loud paper) and to have it rich and gorgeous. I will explore both, but today's focus is on the graphic and fun.

I am just waiting until I have a home of my own where I can hang wallpaper - but when I do, this is going up:

Fornasetti paper by Cole and Son. I love it in all the colorways

Along those same lines this Osborne and Little paper of silhouettes is on my favorites list.

I think that the pink/black/white colorway is my favorite, though Amy Sedaris used the yellow in her hallway.

I have mentioned the Zebra Scalamadre pattern before but having been in a dressing room (at Kate Spade) that covered all the walls and the ceiling with the red pattern, I still am crazy about it. Not too busy for me!

When going for pattern, finding wallpaper inspired by vintage 50s and 60s designs is a great way to get graphic punchy images.

I am loving this Fifi by Sanderson paper. It is a 50s reproduction available from Wallpaper Direct While I like the red and white colorway, the lime and purple would be great for a girl's room

Sanderson also has some other vintage patterns like the Miro and Mobiles but I think that they may be so retro that they wouldn't look good in an house that isn't completely vintage.

The best source for actual vintage wallpaper is here in New York, and I have never visited! I need to head over to Secondhand Rose sometime and take a look at all of the wonderful, weird, wallpapers.

My favorite Happy Decorator, Jonathan Adler has started making a line of wallpapers that all have a punchy kick. While I picked up a muted white and grey Greek key roll of wallpaper at the last JA sample sale, I have to say that the brights are really calling my name.

Another interior designer that came out with wallpaper I adore is the always stylish Kelly Wearstler. Her trellis pattern is a personal favorite.

and comes as a fabric, perfect (and pricey) for a home decor project

Best Friends

They say that Diamonds are a girl's best friend - and believe me I love them (though my real best friends are Becca and Carrie) I am going to focus on Man's best friend - dogs!

I don't have a dog but I grew up with them and my parents are never dog-free. In my current life, however, it is better for me to have them in object form. Starting with this adorable Emersonmade clutch that began my obsession:

I could do an entire post on Emersonmade - from her stunning house to the outstanding products she keeps putting out. I have a feeling that she, her gorgeous husband Ryan, duck Jack and dog Pedro are going to take over the world.

Besides accessorizing yourself, I think that these graphic dogs can really decorate a home.

Why should I fight what the crowd wants? So, on to more pictures of wedding cakes from my saved files.

Let's start simple with this draped square cake. Not traditional, but I think that it would be striking against a more colorful cake table backdrop.

The Saija Chair by Marimekko for Crate and Barrel

I am in a furniture shopping mood, and this chair is right up my alley - 1950s shape with a colorful fabric
But, at $990, it will have to stay in the Crate and Barrel window instead of in my apartment.

Also staying at the store, this adorable elephant straw purse by Kate Spade. I think it may be the cutest thing every (with a black and white print lining) and I even carried it around in the store. $325 is crazy for a basically a joke purse, but I do love it!

I went bike riding this weekend, and now I really want a bicycle. Well, actually I want to live someplace where I would be able to ride a bike, but that is a larger discussion. In the meantime, I am on the hunt for a cute bike!

I loved the Liberty of London print bike for Target. I should have bought this when it came out.

I also really find the Kate Spade new bike by Adeline Adeline charming. Of course, Kate Spade also sells purses that clip onto the bike!

and if you are going to go that route, the next step up is the Chanel bicycle, with Chanel quilted leather seat and "saddle" bags that are detachable Chanel purses. Only $17,000 or so - though I think they are all sold out.

This time last year I was looking forward to going to Mexico for the wedding of our friends Erin and Ray. They had great touches throughout the wedding week - maracas in the welcome bag, mini pinatas at each place at the reception, bride flip flops for the sand.

Even if you aren't having a wedding in Mexico, there are some great ways to incorporate a few south of the border details into your big day.

I am a big fan of Mexican sugar skulls -the iconography is used most during day of the dead celebrations, but I like them all year long. You would think that skulls would be a bit creepy for a party, but there are ways to make them cute.

Met Gala - Savage Grace pt. 2

In addition to Alexander McQueen designs, and those that paid homage to them, the stars and designers showed up in array of looks for last night's Costume Institute Gala.

My favorite looks of the night were

Christina Ricci in a fit and flare Zac Posen. That hourglass is unreal. Crazy for the drama

Ashley Olsen's vintage Dior Couture. The cut and those sleeves are divine

The evening wasn't without some missteps. Though Beyonce's Pucci dress was actually so tight she couldn't step. Really! She had to have her husband and an assistant help carry her up the Met Steps. Honey, when your dress keeps you from walking - go up a size.

Proving even supermodels make a misstep, Naomi Campbell choose an unflattering Alexander McQueen fringe dress for the gala

While I am glad that she (a close friend of the late designer) wore one a piece from the label, this might have been the most awkward choice. Unflattering and droopy, this dress was from the latest collection, designed by Sarah Burton. Perhaps the only misstep of the collection (and it was shown on the runway in black), I think Naomi would have been better off in a piece from the final collection designed by Alexander McQueen

or she should have just done what Marc Jacobs did, and wear the McQueen tartan in homage

I can't wait to see the exhibition, wishing Lee was around for it too.

Met Gala - Savage Grace pt. 1

Last night was one of the most anticipated nights in fashion - the annual Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute Ball. This year the ball celebrates the opening of the Costume Institutes's new exhibit dedicated to Alexander McQueen. Titled Savage Grace, the exhibition is a retrospective of the last designer's career. I will be going to see the exhibit (probably more than once) so will review it, but in the meantime I wanted to pick out some of my favorite highlights from the party last night.

A number of people dressed in McQueen (as I would have suspected) though I found that Stella McCartney was the most represented designer. Here are some of the McQueens worn on the red carpet last night

Karen Elson in the last McQueen she ever wore on the runway

Hamish Bowles in the McQueen tartan (hurrah for this)

Daphne Guinness, who changed into her feathered flock live in the Barney's window (see the video of her performance art piece here)

Coco Rocha in McQueen. She wanted to wear a more exuberant piece from one of his collections, but they were all in the exhibit

and my favorite was Sarah Jessica Parker in a McQueen from Fall 2005. She wanted to wear a piece that Lee designed. SJP was McQueen's date for the only Met Ball he ever attended, for Anglomania in 2006

I think that there were also some pieces by other designers that were definite tributes to McQueen.

The dress Dee Hilfiger wore (designed by Tommy) reminded me of this McQueen from Fall 2004

Royal Wedding

I know our eyes are saturated with Royal Wedding images - I couldn't get enough on Friday, but I wanted capture my favorite parts of the day (for my own memories if not yours)

The dress - it was all about the dress when I woke up early friday morning. I was so happy that Catherine choose Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen. I think it was a wonderful boost for the house that continues on after his tragic suicide last year. I think it was a nod to British brands and the faith in a global British fashion house while respecting the craftsmanship that the house brought, with intricate lace from the Royal School of Needlework. Did it look like a McQueen - no. Did it look like a gorgeous dress that fit better than almost any dress I have seen - yes. I thought it was an appropriate triumph.

Her sister Pippa's dress was also fantastic, also by McQueen

The couple seemed really in love, with his "You look beautiful" as she reached him and his aside to her dad "Just a small family affair" to break the tension. They said their vows - she didn't obey, the for richer for poorer will probably not be an issue, and she got a ring from Welsh gold. He isn't wearing one and if it works for them, it works for them.

The carriage ride back was fairytale like - the new Duke and Duchess look like they are from a storybook.

Hottie Harry makes me laugh in the kids wagon.

Speaking of laughter, I guess the youngest member of the wedding party didn't care about the balcony kiss.

I however, loved it - and loved that they did two! The bashful smiles and giggles afterward seem just right for the new couple.

Also just right - the surprise drive away in a loaner from Prince Charles. While a search and rescue helicopter (which William works on for his day job) overhead, the newly married couple speeds off in an Aston Martin with balloons, Ju5t Wed plates and a Learners designation (the red L, with hearts in the corners - nice touch)

For the party later her dress - McQueen again - and his tux look fantastic (though I am on the fence on her fuzzy cardigan)

And am gleeful about the hat parade earlier in the day.

Makes me want to be British - and I delighted in my friend Abi's facebook post. She is British, and posted a pic from her Bristol home with her husband and a Will and Kate flag. The post "drinking Pim's in my wedding dress" made me smile.

Beyond the Royal Wedding, here is what I have been obsessed with this week:

Film "The Republic of Love"

This odd little gem of a movie is perfect for those that like quirky romantic dramas. I stumbled upon it during a browse through Netflix (available on demand) and really feel in love with it. Starring the dreamy Bruce Greenwood and the luminescent Emilia Fox, it is a story about people stumbling into love. A bit slow to start but once they meet I couldn't turn away. You can tell the director's Bollywood past in the music and colors but this Canadian set love story was universally good. Two thumbs up.

Books: "An Object of Beauty" by Steve Martin.

While nothing can top"Shopgirl" in my estimation, Steve Martin delivers another slice of life in his new novel. Set in the New York art world, with paintings throughout and nods to modern masters that rang a bell with me, this engaging story kept me turning the pages with anticipation. I kept wanting to read more, but was afraid to rush too fast because I didn't want it to end. A bit of mystery, a bit of romance, a bit of drama and strung together in smart and musical language that I can hear the author reading aloud. Actually, I bet the audiobook is good too.

Museum "Set in Style the Jewelry of Van Cleef & Arpels" at the Cooper-Hewitt Design Museum

This exhibition of stunning jewelry is a testament to girl's best friend. Beyond diamonds there are rubies, sapphires, emeralds, and enough enamel work and gold to make even the late Elizabeth Taylor happy. In fact, one section of the exhibit under "Personalities" has a few of Ms. Taylor's pieces, along with those of Princess Grace and others. The exhibition is organized in a number of different groups, including "Innovation"and "Nature" and while absolutely no fault can be found with the gorgeous pieces, the layout of the exhibit as it relates to the catalogue is horrible. Obviously sent to the printer before the exhibition was finalized, if you want to follow the program (and there is no information in the cases, so you want to read along), it will be completely inefficient - zigzagging all over the place. Overlooking that, I could have gotten lost in the jewels and accessories for hours. Though when I got home, all my costume jewelry seemed a little less bright.

Shopping - Bass Shoes

Though I am doing my best to get rid of shoes - two pairs down this week - I did buy a pair recently. Baby steps, baby steps. I added to my Bass saddle shoe collection with a new lightweight canvas pair. This printed style will be perfect for summer, just slipped on with a pair of boyfriend shorts. While trying to keep my addiction in check, I am also coveting this style from the Bass collaboration with stylist/designer Rachel Antonoff. Who can resist pink patent leather?

No, not the Rihanna song. We are expecting a bit of rain today in NYC and so I thought I would do an umbrella round up for function and decor.

I carry a trusty compact collapsible umbrella in my bag every day (you never know when you will be caught in the rain) but if I had my way I would carry this huge Scalamandre zebra umbrella like the stylish Kelly Wearstler.

This is my favorite wallpaper pattern as well, so to have it on a dreary rain day would make me so happy!
This one is so large, though, that everyone on the sidewalk would hate me.

Sunglasses

If you know me in real life, you know that I am addicted to Warby Parker glasses.

I have convinced at least two friends to purchase the super stylish frames, and that means that Warby Parker has donated two more pairs of glasses to people in need. Maybe one day I will qualify for a bulk discount, since I just bought my 4th pair, or in the best case I will work for them and snag some free glasses.

Since Warby Parker does not make sunglasses, at least not yet, I have been on the hunt for the perfect pair.

I love my prescription Chanels, but the prescription is outdated and though I hate to say it (I shudder to think how much I spent on them) the rhinestones on the sides are starting to come out. Better to have no Chanels than ghetto Chanels.

Now that I am used to getting amazing eyeglasses from WP for only $95, I have a hard time paying tons more for great sunglasses. Some options I am mulling over include:

The Illesteva Lenox. These come in great colors - the blue is my favorite - and the sun glass portion is removable, so I can justify the price. Available (when they aren't sold out) from Gargyle and Opening Ceremony

Another favorite:
The Ray-Ban Wayfarers. Classic. I dont' think these will ever go out of style. I like them with a bit of personality, so would choose to rock them with special NYC subway interiors

I love having glasses that you don't see on everyone else, which is why perhaps vintage frames are the way to go. I just found an Etsy site (based out of NC, I wonder where she gets all these frames?) Vintage50sEyewear sells deadstock never used frames in some fantastic styles and shapes. There were so many to choose from, but I loved the look of these plaid glasses (putting sunglass lens in them would pop)

Around New York - Infinite Variety Quilt Show

From March 25-30, the Park Avenue Armory transformed into a sea of red and white quilts. A special exhibit by the American Folk Art Museum entitled “Infinite Variety: Three Centuries of Red and White Quilts,” featured over 650 textiles, the largest quilt exhibition ever to be displayed in the New York area. the exhibit was free and open to the public. The floor-to-ceiling showcase spanned 300 years of quilt designs all of which are on loan from the collection of Joanna S. Rose. Ms. Rose will be donating 50 of the quilts to the American Folk Art Museum after the show.

The exhibition filled the 55,000- square-foot drill hall to a height of 45 feet with a series of “rooms” defined by quilts that were suspended on cardboard tubes. In the center of the installation, which was designed by the New York firm Thinc Design, a group of quilts hung in a spiral formation that the designers liken to a tornado, above a circle of chairs that alludes to the social — and female-dominated — nature of quilting.

I had a hard time picking a favorite. The works were all different, from embroidered and appliqued to geometric and pieced. Almost all by unknown quilters, there were so many I would love to have at home.

If I had to choose a favorite - I really loved the graphic impact of this vortex quilt

and the airplanes reminded me of my grandfather. What a lucky boy to have had this on his bed.

Makes me want to break out my sewing machine and join a modern day quilting circle.

Wedding Wednesday - Animal invitations

The first invitation roundup focused on trees - this one keeps with a nature theme, too, but moves to the animal kingdom. Wedding invitations featuring animals are becoming very popular. We used animals for our welcome folders and table numbers, but often couples are incorporating fuzzy beasts (or birds or whatever) into the theme or iconography of the big day.

Not a new trend, but one with staying power are birds. I have seen really great examples of this trend, and some that just seemed to slap a bird on a regular invite to try to keep up with the cool crowd. (Side note: have you all seen the video from "Portlandia" called "Put a Bird On It" ? Brilliant! A perfect example of the overzealous use of the imagery in home and gift decor. That Fred Armisten is a funny guy. Find it here)

Out of the many bird invitations I have seen this simple silhouette invite is soothing. The color choice and casual typeface would make this ideal for a backyard or beach wedding.

A twist on the usual bird invite - I love that these are pigeons! I don't care for them in real life (I think of them as rats with wings) but this cute version just calls out for a NYC wedding.

With Easter just around the corner, Harpo (our pet rabbit) is gearing up for the celebration.

Actually she is acting like her normal, entitled self just hoping that we will give her some banana or leave a computer cord unattended as a tasty treat.

I love this time of year because more cute rabbit things are available. I don't want to turn into crazy bunny lady, but every once in a while something catches my eye.

The Easter card designs from one of my favorite stationers, Rifle Paper Co., features gray rabbits. Perfect! I wish she offered these as a print, without the "Happy Easter" tag but I might have to get and frame the cards as Harpo artwork.

If I was looking for something to wear, instead of something for the apartment, I would be tempted by this ceramic necklace from Elm Design. The major neck ruff makes me laugh.

This would probably be too much for an adult to hang at home year round - but would look super cute in a kid's room!

This weekend I went to a poker night with friends. While I will never admit to being good at the game (I have been told that laughing with glee and clapping my hands together when the dealer lays down the flop is a "tell") I do love the idea of a poker or game night.

Games are big in my family - we play trivial pursuit every Thanksgiving - and I think that a little healthy competition is good between friends.

When you are planning your next get together, and now that it is warm enough the BBQs might be starting up, why not add a little card action?

For Japan with Love - Bloggers Day of Silence

It has been hard to wrap my brain around the devastation and disaster in Japan. Videos of the water rushing in and taking away buildings, the people and animals lost and hurt have tugged at my heartstrings. With Japan half a world away it is easy to forget how our efforts here can have a real effect. By donating to an organization that is on the ground in Japan we can help our fellow human beings in an immediate way.

Two bloggers, Utterly Engaged and Ever Ours, thought that a great way to reflect on the day was to take a moment of silence. A breath, to think about what is going on, and to donate - and hopefully encourage their followers to as well. So that moment of silence is tomorrow. Writers all over the world are putting away the computers to do something to help, and I am participating as well.

The name of this effort - and the website to read about it - is For Japan With Love.

I have also contributed to the charity of choice for this event. Utterly Engaged and Ever Ours have handpicked ShelterBox as the organization to donate to. ShelterBox provides emergency shelter and lifesaving supplies for families around the world who are affected by disasters at the time when they need it the most. Each large green ShelterBox is tailored to a disaster but typically contains a disaster relief tent for an extended family, blankets, water storage and purification equipment, cooking utensils, a stove, a basic tool kit, a children’s activity pack and other vital items.

So, contribute if you can, and refrain from your own blog with a post about this. We can do a lot by being quiet.

So, no posts from me tomorrow - for a great reason.

When I think of adding a dash of green to my ensemble- on St. Patrick's Day or any other time, I am inspired by this photo of Judy Aldridge who runs the great style and home decor blog Atlantis Home - her gorgeous vintage jacket with jeans and statement accessories is just the way I long to dress.

She also has a shop on her blog that includes some great finds for home and accessories. I am thinking that this Alexis Kirk necklace might need to be mine....

Wedding Wednesday - Shoes!

Inspired by this shoot on Style Me Pretty from Erin Hearts Court photography. The shots of shoes really stood out:

For many brides, the most important Sartorial decision is the dress. For me, it was the shoes.

I had a hard time deciding on a dress, and ended up with one for the ceremony and another for the reception and not completely satisfied by that solution. I just knew that whatever dress I ended up with had to match my shoe choice. I was so excited about my shoes that we had a picture of just our shoes taken!

My shoes are by a Brazilian company, Melissa, and their collaboration with Vivienne Westwood. The shoes are the Lady Dragon Heart and are made of rubber. Comfortable for dancing and the red shiny plastic heart makes me smile every time I see them! My maid of honor wore the same shoes, with a blue heart. I have since become a convert to these shoes, and unabashedly buy them whenever they are on sale. I now have two of the hearts, two of the balls, and a pair of cherries!

I think that they are a great choice for a more whimsical bride. I found mine on Zappos

For another shoe statement, I was obsessed with Kate Spade's Carly sequin slingback. They sold out everywhere, and are no longer available (if someone finds a pair in 7.5 - grab them! I will be your best friend) but an updated version with glitter and hot pink accents, called the Charm.

And just released from Kate Spade are these darlings, called the "Cluster" The pearls on the top would be a great compliment to a wedding dress.

If you want all the glitz on the back of the shoe, instead of the toes, these Miu Mius from Net-a-Porter might do the trick

or all over sparkle (for any bride with an extra $3,300 ) these Louboutins sure are pretty

Perhaps you wanted a much more casual - and less expensive - option, or something comfy to change into after you have danced some of the night away? Then these TOMS would be a welcome relief - and when you buy a pair you donate a pair of shoes to someone in need. What could be better than that?

Wire Wrap Jewelry

I have been taking a wire wrap jewelry design class at FIT.   I image my husband was thinking "Another craft (and supplies)?"   I just like to find new things to make - and new projects for Craft Concierge options (I am thinking jewelry will be perfect presents for maids of honor). I made necklaces to thank the Aunts that threw my bridal shower and now I will be able to teach brides how to make a perfect "Thank You" for their special ladies.

To design and make jewelry for the class I had to go buy supplies. Thankfully - or maybe not - you can find anything in New York, and after saying the major words "____(name of the professor) sent me" I was able to get into wholesale-only gem dealers. Ah, the treasures! I entered rooms covered from floor to ceiling with rows and rows of beads - from Czech glass to semi-precious and precious stones in every size and shape and color. I had such a hard time narrowing it down.   Since I am just beginning I stayed away from the precious stones, but figured that if I was going to make something, I may as well make something I would wear, and went with semi-precious.

I brought home strands of iolite, agate, quartz, and garnet. I also bought sterling and argentium silver. Argentium is made with silver but not copper so it won't tarnish. It is a bit pricier but worth it for jewelry you want to keep shiny.   The price of silver is the highest it has ever been, so these pieces better look good! Thank goodness I am not yet ready to work with gold.

I will post pictures of my creations once they are finished, but I have been looking around for great examples of wire wrap jewelry to inspire my own designs.

The first place to start was with Agapantha, designed and handmade by my friend Dani Paquin. She made my wedding earrings (and an amazing necklace that she created from my grandmother's engagement ring). I cannot say enough great things about Dani as a person or her jewelry. I have so many favorites - I own a number of pieces - but here are great examples:

All Dani's pieces are named after women in her life, and the company named for the first flower her grandmother taught her how to say. Agapantha is carried in stores all over the U.S. but she also takes orders (and loves custom ones!) in her online shop

She does wonders working vintage pieces into her designs

She will also teach you how to work in pieces with meaning to you, and is always happy to host a jewelry house party or workshop. If you are near Los Angeles, you have to look her up!

Another vintage inspired pieces is this one from BHLDN

I feel like I may be hitting some estate sales and plowing through my own jewelry box looking for pieces to combine in interesting ways.

I don't always need to have vintage feeling pieces, and luckily this type of jewelry techniques lends itself to clean and classic styles too. This pieces, also from BHLDN, is simple and pretty and a great way to focus on a single stone (it would be worth it to splurge on a precious one!)

The detail work on small stones is difficult, as I am finding out, so those tiny seed pearls take a lot of work. When you put lots of small stones and quite a bit of wire together you can make something gorgeous, like these earrings from Annabella

Made with 22k gold, black and white diamonds, and multicolored sapphires, these earrings are stunners!

Will my work ever be this good (albeit with lower priced materials)? I just have to keep practicing...

Can't wait to show you all my designs, wear them out, and hopefully teach someone else to make lovely gifts.

Alexander McQueen for a Wedding

It has been reported that Kate Middleton will wear Alexander McQueen when she marries Prince William next month. I won't believe anything until I see it, but nothing would please me more!

I have always been a fan of Alexander McQueen, and after his tragic suicide last year his right hand woman and now creative director Sarah Burton has done an wonderful job in releasing collections true to his initial vision of the romantic, gothic, and inspired. This season's collection is full of great evening dresses, perhaps foreshadowing the Royal gown.

Fall 2011 RTW:

This blue bodice is made from broken porcelain dishes. Gives new meaning to Wedding China!
